South Island School Displays of The New Zealand AIDS Memorial QuiltThe first Unfolding of the New Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt School displays in the North Island Public Displays in the North Island and the South Island International Displays which include the New Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt The 1992 tour of Northland of the New Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt Now that The Quilt is housed at Te Papa in Wellington, most of the following is for historical information only. At school displays, we like to talk to talk to the students in class groups (usually two classes at once) about what HIV and AIDS are, how you contract HIV, how you don't contract HIV (including condom use), and what it is like living with HIV/AIDS, as well as talking about The Quilt and letting them have a good look at it and talking about it amongst themselves and with the people accompanying The Quilt. These sessions normally take up the full hour long period, and then we do it all again with the next class, concentrating where possible on the 14 and 15 year old students. When The Quilt is 'on tour' to a particular region, it is common to do this five or six times a day for two weeks, with a different school in a different town each day. Below are photos from some of the many Displays of The Quilt taken during various school visits in the South Island. Some are from private photograph collections while others were taken by NZ Quilt Project personnel. The photos are arranged in approximate geographic order, from north to south, and if there are photos from more than one visit to a school, in approximate chronological order.

Nelson - Marlborough Technical Institute, Nelson campusThe first four photos are from the first visit to the Nelson - Marlborough Technical Institute's Nelson campus, in November 1996. The last two are from a visit in 1998.
Nelson College for GirlsThe Quilt has visited Nelson College for Girls three times. This photo is from the second visit in June 1998.
Nayland College, NelsonThis would be one of the most challenging places devised to hold a display of The Quilt (and talk about it) - inside the school library while it is still open for business as usual with others coming in to use the computers, do research etc. We've done it in the library, twice, for two days days each time. The first three photos are from the first visit in November 1996.
The area on the floor where we could spread blocks out (as seen in the photo above) was removed when the layout of the Library was changed before our next visit in 2002. The following two photos are from the 2002 visit.
Waimea College, Richmond, Nelson![]()
Marlborough Boys CollegeThis photo is not dated, but is possibly the 17 May 1999 visit to the school.
Murchison Area School![]() At Murchison, there was plenty of room in the gymnasium to display The Quilt, and the class sizes were small, especially this one, the senior school. Cashmere High School, ChristchurchThese two photos from Cashmere High School in Christchurch were taken while people were talking about The Quilt and the procedure to be taken during an Unfolding Ceremony at the school. This visit was described as being a very emotional, caring and loving experience for everyone at the school and increased everyones knowledge and acceptance of one of the teachers who had recently been diagnosed with having HIV, and word of his diagnosis had spread through the school. This visit was on 10th October, 1994.
Hillmoreton High School, ChristchurchThe following day, (11th October, 1994), The Quilt was at Hillmoreton High School, also in Christchurch.
Aranui High School, Christchurch12th October, 1994 saw The Quilt at Aranui High School in Christchurch.
